What is Syncope?

Syncope is just another medical term for the condition where a person suddenly loses consciousness or faints.

What causes Syncope?

The primary causes of syncope according to doctors are instances where the brain has momentarily lost the normalflow of oxygenated blood. Other factors that can lead to this medical condition are –

  • Drop in blood pressure
  • Drop in heart rate
  • Changes in the amount of blood in different areas of the patient’s body

What are the symptoms of Syncope?

The primary symptoms of syncope are as follows –

  • Frequent bouts of blackouts
  • The patient may complain about feeling lightheaded now and then
  • The patient may start falling without any apparent reason
  • The patient may start feeling dizzy for extended periods
  • The patient may complain about feeling drowsy or groggy
  • The patient may start falling without any apparent reason
  • The patient may faint after partaking in strenuous activities, such as exercising
  • The patient may feel weak if he or she has to stand for a long time
  • The patient may or may not start having issues with his or her vision such as having tunnel vision
  • The patient may or may not suffer from frequent and severe bouts of headaches

What is the treatment of Syncope? (You can mention that you should consult with your pediatric cardiologist etc)

Treatment may or may not involve the following –

  • The patient should avoid partaking in activities that previously led to syncope.
  • The patient should avoid taking IV fluids in case it led previously to syncope.
  • The doctor of the patient may suggest partaking in leg muscle tensing therapy to mitigate the symptoms and intensity of syncope.
  • The patient might need to get a pacemaker implanted to his or her heart if the condition is the result of congenital heart disease, such as irregular heartbeats.
  • The patient might be given certain medications to mitigate the symptoms of the medical condition.
