What is a Cardiac Ultrasound?

Cardiac ultrasound or better known as echocardiography, is the process of creating an image using ultrasound imaging technique of the heart.

Type of cardiac ultrasound is as follows –

  • Tissue Doppler imaging (or better known as TDI)
  • Speckle tracking and
  • 3D strain tracking.

The image obtained from this process is not manually analyzed. Instead, our professionals at Pediatric Cardiology Specialists will analyze the image against the standard image of a healthy heart in a bid to zero in on the abnormalities of the heart under examination.

What is a Cardiac Ultrasound used for?

Since the heart is a complex and fast-moving organ, issues with the same, such as a cardiovascular disease or related heart conditions, need a closer non-invasive examination by a pediatric cardiologist.

Other types of heart disease that can be best diagnosed with a cardiac ultrasound are as follows –

  • Abnormal heart valves
  • Abnormal heart rhythms
  • Heart murmurs
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Pericarditis
  • Pericardial effusion
  • Infectious endocarditis
  • Pulmonary hypertension and many more.

When may my child need a Cardiac Ultrasound? (Here you can see the symptoms)

If a child has the following issues, then his or her pediatric cardiologist may recommend echocardiography –

  • In case the child exhibits a blue skin tone – a classic symptom of cyanosis that is the result of a heart murmur.
  • The child may be subjected to this procedure in case he or she belongs to a family with a history of congenital heart problems.
  • In case the child has abnormal test results that may or may not indicate issues with the individual’s circulatory system.
  • In case the child has been subjected to infectious diseases of the heart or recently recovered from one. This is done to ensure that the heart of the child has not suffered irreversible damage.
  • In case the child often shows signs of high blood pressure or has irregular heartbeats.
