What is Cardiac Catheterization?

Cardiac catheterization is a medical process where a thin tube (catheter) is inserted through the groin, arm, or neck of a patient and then the same is threaded through the blood vessels to the heart of the patient.

What is Cardiac Catheterization used for?

The above procedure is recommended and carried out by doctors on patients who have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, such as blocked arteries. It can be recommended by doctors, as a form of treatment (in case one needs coronary angioplasty or stenting then this is the process that would allow the doctor to complete the treatment) and as a form of a diagnostic procedure.

In short, one may or may not be subjected to this treatment/diagnostic procedure when he or she is diagnosed with any of the following diseases –

  • Atherosclerosis
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Heart failure
  • Heart valve disease

The patient who would undergo this treatment or diagnostic procedure will be fully awake but will be under the influence of local anesthesia.

The recovery period for this process is very short and the chances of the patient suffering complications are also negligible.

When may my child need Cardiac Catheterization?

In case your child was born with congenital heart disease or has been diagnosed with certain heart conditions, then his or her pediatric cardiologist may suggest this procedure either as a form of diagnostic tool or as a treatment.
